Dental Practice Cybersecurity: What Should You Protect?

A practical cybersecurity guide for dental practices covering workstations, imaging, networks, email, backups, vendor access and account security.

A dental practice depends on more than the practice-management application. Operatories, imaging, front-desk workstations, email, scanners, printers, Wi-Fi, vendor connections, and backups all form part of the security and uptime picture.

Start with identity and workstations

Use individual accounts where supported, limit administrative rights, apply updates, protect endpoints, and require strong authentication for cloud services and remote access. Front-desk and operatory systems should not depend on unmanaged local administrator access for routine work.

Separate networks by purpose

Clinical and business systems should not automatically share the same trust level as guest Wi-Fi or unrelated devices. Segmentation can reduce exposure and make troubleshooting easier when designed around the equipment and vendor requirements in the practice.

Control vendor and remote access

Imaging, practice-management, and equipment vendors may need remote support. Document how they connect, who authorizes access, and whether old remote tools or accounts remain enabled after they are no longer needed.

Protect email and cloud accounts

Phishing and stolen credentials can bypass an otherwise well-built local network. Multi-factor authentication, email security controls, user awareness, and a clear account-compromise response process are important layers.

Plan for recovery

Backups should include the data and configurations needed to resume operations, and restoration should be tested. A practice should know which systems must return first and which vendors will be needed during recovery.
